Who Should Take ContraplanII

ContraplanII® is available for any woman who needs it. The sooner you take ContraplanII®, the better it works. You should use ContraplanII® within 72 hours (3 days) for protection against unplanned pregnancy.

ContraplanII® is a backup method of birth control you can use when:

  • You didn’t use any birth control method before intercourse
  • Your regular birth control method failed (e.g., your partner’s condom broke or slipped)
  • There was an issue with your regular method (e.g., you forgot to take your regular birth control pill)

How To Take ContraplanII

ContraplanII® is two capsules you take together by mouth within 72 hours (3 days) the protection against unplanned pregnancy. The sooner, the better.

How to know it worked: You will know ContraplanII® worked when you get your next period, which should come at the expected time, or within a week of the expected time.


  • Women are more likely to use Emergency contraceptive pills if they already have them when needed.Also, having them on hand enables women to take them as soon as possible after unplanned intercourse .
